Australian power producer Origin Energy Ltd (ASX:ORG) announced plans on Monday to invest approximately AUD 400 million (USD 264m/EUR 243.9m) in constructing a 300-MW/650-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its gas-fired power station near Mortlake, Victoria.

The Mortlake Power Station battery aims to bolster Origin Energy’s renewable power generation and ensure consistent deliveries to customers. The company has already secured a technology contract with US energy storage specialist Fluence Energy and anticipates commencing site preparation and civil works in the coming months.

The battery is expected to become operational in late 2026.

“With the proliferation of wind and solar farms, particularly in Victoria’s South West Renewable Energy Zone, the Mortlake battery will help keep the grid stable and support more renewable energy coming into the system as the market continues to decarbonize,” stated Origin’s CEO Frank Calabria.

Last year, Origin made a final investment decision (FID) to build a 460-MW battery within the Eraring coal-fired complex in New South Wales. The site is currently under construction and will be further expanded with an additional 700 MW of capacity.
