PSO, HUBCO Green & BYD-MMC launch a fast EV charging station on the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway, marking a major leap for electric mobility in Pakistan.
Pakistan is making a significant move towards greener transportation with its first fast EV charging station on the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway. This project comes from a partnership between Pakistan State Oil, HUBCO Green Energy, and BYD-MMC, and it’s all about improving the electric vehicle setup in the country and moving towards cleaner energy.
This new charging station, located at the Bhera Service Area on the M2 Motorway, is a milestone since it’s the first fast-charging spot on a national highway. It’s part of a wider push to promote New Energy Vehicles and help cut down on carbon emissions in Pakistan.
A Public-Private Partnership for Sustainable Highways
The collaboration includes prominent industry stakeholders: PSO, the largest energy company in the country; HUBCO Green, a subsidiary of Hub Power Company Ltd. dedicated to green energy solutions; and BYD-MMC, the exclusive local partner of the renowned global electric vehicle manufacturer BYD.
“This partnership exemplifies our dedication to decarbonizing Pakistan’s transportation sector,” stated Yousuf Naseem Khokhar, Chairman of HUBCO Green. “We are facilitating cleaner and more accessible mobility solutions for all Pakistanis.”
According to representatives from PSO, this initiative marks the beginning of a nationwide electric vehicle fast-charging network, with plans underway to establish additional stations along high-traffic corridors.

Features of the Fast EV Charging Station
The newly inaugurated EV charging station in Pakistan is equipped with
- Ultra-fast chargers that are compatible with a wide array of electric vehicles (EVs)
- User-friendly digital interfaces that facilitate payment and usage monitoring
- Real-time support along with safety features
- 100% renewable energy sourcing to ensure sustainable operations
The station also offers rest facilities and various amenities for travelers, designed to accommodate both brief stops and extended vehicle charging durations.
“The objective is to provide a seamless experience for long-distance EV travel in Pakistan, alleviating concerns related to range,” stated a representative from BYD-MMC.
Significance of Clean Energy and Infrastructure Development
According to the Pakistan Electric Vehicle Policy 2020–2025, the government aspires to convert 30% of all vehicles on the road to electric vehicles by 2030. Nonetheless, a significant obstacle has been the absence of dependable charging infrastructure. The establishment of the Bhera station represents a crucial advancement in addressing this deficiency along one of the nation’s most heavily utilized motorways.
It is projected that 50,000 electric vehicles will be operational on Pakistani roads by 2026, and infrastructure of this nature will be vital in accommodating their requirements.
“Without accessible charging options, the adoption of electric vehicles in Pakistan is confined to major urban areas. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to considering regions beyond city limits,” stated Shahbaz Mirza, CEO of HUBCO Green.
The Lahore–Islamabad Motorway is just the beginning. PSO and HUBCO Green are planning to roll out this EV fast-charging network to more national highways and economic zones. This move fits right in with what’s happening worldwide, as countries are putting money into EV infrastructure to hit their environmental goals.
One industry analyst pointed out, “Pakistan is really starting to catch up with the global shift to electric vehicles.” They added that this launch could pave the way for more infrastructure projects all over the country.
By teaming up BYD’s tech with local know-how through MMC, they’re making sure the charging stations meet international standards for performance, safety, and sustainability.
The Expanding Role of PSO in Electric Vehicle Mobility
In recent years, PSO has been proactively engaging in sustainable initiatives, such as the installation of solar energy systems, the promotion of biofuels, and now the establishment of electric vehicle charging stations in Pakistan. This initiative marks its most ambitious electric vehicle project to date.
“As the energy landscape evolves, so must we,” stated a representative from PSO. “We are no longer merely fueling vehicles; we are powering the future of mobility.”
The company envisions maintaining its leadership in the energy sector by investing in alternatives to fossil fuels, as well as in the infrastructure necessary to support the widespread adoption of electric mobility.
Way Forward
Having accomplished this initial milestone, the focus now shifts to execution and public acceptance. Experts indicate that awareness campaigns, incentives, and the affordability of electric vehicles will significantly contribute to the growth of electric mobility.
At present, the Lahore–Islamabad EV fast-charging station serves as a testament to innovation, environmental stewardship, and progressive planning within Pakistan’s transportation sector.
