A bill to allow up to 1,200 MW of offshore wind in Delaware was passed by the state’s legislature on Sunday and is now on the governor’s desk.
Oceantic Network praised the passage of Senate Bill 265, also known as the Delaware Energy Solutions Act of 2024.
The organisation said that Delaware will now join other East Coast states as an offshore wind buyer.
“In addition to setting up the state’s first projects, the bill sets up processes for transmission siting so offshore wind can power homes and businesses,” said Sam Salustro, vice president of strategic communications at Oceanic Network.
The bill allows for the issuance of solicitations to procure at least 800 MW but no more than 1,200 MW of offshore wind to Delaware. Power can be bought from a project serving only Delaware or coordinating with other states.
And just in time, the US Department of the Interior announced an offshore wind energy lease sale in the Central Atlantic, including one area offshore Delaware and Maryland and one offshore Virginia.
