UL Solutions which is a provider of electrical standards has announced a new testing protocol that deals with the enhancement request of fire service organizations for improved evaluation on residential battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The Investigative Material 9540B by UL on Major Domestic Battery Energy Storage Systems Fire Test has an Inspection System with a Tough Ignition Scene and Broader Qualification Standards. This protocol is for examining the burning inertia of a BESS in case the rise of temperatures inside causes the spread of fire out on a BESS following the initiation of internal explosion in a battery cell.
Ten years ago, battery energy storage systems became operational and that is when UL Solutions started dealing with the connected fire safety issues in collaboration with fire protection and battery experts, original equipment manufacturers, code authorities and other relevant parties to improve test methods for examining the thermal runaway fire spread in BESS.
